Summary

The Spiritual Health Practitioner, Lead provides clinical, operational, and team leadership for Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care services within a person - and family - centred model of care. Reporting to the Director, Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care, the role supports the delivery of compassionate, culturally responsive, and spiritually inclusive care while advancing Providence Health Care’s Mission, Vision, Values, and strategic priorities.

  • Provides leadership and coordination for Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care services, guiding practitioners, on-call resources, and designated staff to support consistent, high-quality person-centred care.
  • Coordinates work activities, contributes to recruitment, conducts performance evaluations, and supports constructive resolution of workplace concerns.
  • Leads program and service development in collaboration with the Director, including planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating departmental strategic directions, policies, procedures, and initiatives that strengthen the integration of spiritual health across the organization.
  • Delivers comprehensive spiritual and emotional care to patients, residents, clients, families, and staff, including assessment of spiritual care needs, crisis support, and compassionate assistance during serious illness, loss, and end-of-life discussions in ways that respect individual beliefs, cultures, values, and traditions.
  • Advances education, mentorship, and professional development by providing spiritual health education to staff, patients, residents, families, volunteers, and community partners, and by mentoring, supervising, and supporting Clinical Psychospiritual Education interns, residents, students, and other learners.
  • Builds collaborative partnerships internally and within the community, working closely with interdisciplinary health-care teams, community clergy, faith and spiritual leaders, support groups, and other partners to enhance clinical care, education, research, family support, and staff development.
  • Supports organizational responsiveness and continuity of spiritual care by mentoring community faith leaders and volunteers, participating in on-call and back-up on-call responsibilities as required, and responding to organizational emergencies while promoting a safe, respectful, inclusive, and civil environment for all.

What You Bring

Education, Training and Experience

  • Master’s degree in health care, Theology, Public and Pastoral Leadership, Counseling, Spiritual Practices, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of Clinical Psychospiritual Education (CPE), including an Advanced (Contextual) unit.
  • Certification as a Spiritual Health Practitioner with CASC/ACSS is preferred.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience in a leadership capacity.
  • Maintains good standing in a spiritual, religious, or faith community affiliated with the individual’s chosen tradition

  • Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment and technologies, including computer applications, information technology, educational and visual technologies, electronic medical records such as Cerner, pagers, and other communication systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to diverse patient populations and support all expressions of spirituality without imposing personal religious beliefs.
  • Demonstrated ability to approach spiritual health issues in a person-centred manner with insight, discernment, and flexibility.

Your Day to Day:

  • Provides leadership to designated Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care staff by setting priorities, managing workload, establishing performance expectations, and evaluating individual and team performance in collaboration with the Director.
  • Designs, implements, monitors, and evaluates Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care programs and services, supporting the department’s strategic goals and Providence Health Care’s mission, vision, values, and commitment to wholistic care.
  • Leads education, professional development, and evidence-based practice initiatives for staff, students, and spiritual health practitioners, while remaining current with CASC/ACSS educational standards and national curriculum developments.
  • Collaborates with internal leaders, interdisciplinary teams, committees, community clergy, spiritual and cultural representatives, and volunteers to strengthen spiritual care services and support organizational priorities.
  • Provides comprehensive spiritual and emotional care to patients, residents, families, and staff, including assessment, counselling, supportive presence, prayer, rituals, memorials, and support during anxiety, loss, death, crisis, and spiritual or existential distress.
  • Supports departmental operations through budget monitoring, policy and procedure development, quality improvement, risk management, health and safety activities, communications, grant applications, reporting, and maintenance of spiritual care activity records.
  • Mentors and supports students, staff, volunteers, and faith-specific visitors, and promotes awareness and respect for diverse spiritual, religious, and cultural beliefs and practices across the organization.
  • Plans and participates in spiritual programs, worship services, memorial services, spirituality groups, educational activities, retreats, awareness events, and other department and facility-wide initiatives.
  • Participates in research and knowledge-development opportunities and promotes the integration of research and evidence-informed practices within Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care.
  • Participates in on-call and back-up on-call coverage and responds to organizational emergencies and crisis situations, including Code Orange and psychosocial disaster response, while providing spiritual health support in accordance with Catholic Healthcare principles and Health Ethics Guidelines
