Summary

The Porter Ward Aide plays a vital role in maintaining smooth hospital operations by providing a friendly and reliable presence. PWAs are responsible for transporting patients of all ages, as well as moving supplies and equipment throughout the facility. They work closely with the care team to assist in patient mobilization, including performing lifts and transfers from stretchers and wheelchairs.

PWAs carry out their duties with compassion, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to patient care and customer service. Their respectful and professional approach helps create a safe and supportive environment for patients and staff alike.

Education
Grade 12 plus one year’s recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Your Day to Day

  • Patient Transport & Support: Safely transports patients using stretchers, wheelchairs, or specialty beds; assists with lifting and mobilization using proper techniques and equipment; provides comfort and communicates patient concerns to staff.
  • Equipment & Supply Handling: Moves medical equipment and accessories (e.g., IV poles, oxygen tanks); disposes of used items and returns reusable equipment for reprocessing; ensures oxygen and suction supplies are available and functional.

  • Deceased Patient Transport: Transfers deceased patients respectfully to the morgue, logs required information, and uses appropriate lifting equipment to ensure safe handling.

  • Stocking & Cleanliness: Monitors and replenishes supplies; keeps storage areas, carts, and patient spaces clean and organized to maintain a safe and efficient environment.

  • Delivery & Retrieval Tasks: Transports a wide range of items including medications, specimens, personal belongings, and medical records; locates and returns missing or misplaced equipment.

  • Clerical & Communication Support: Performs basic administrative tasks such as answering phones, filing, arranging portering support, and operating office equipment like photocopiers and fax machines.
