The salary range for this position is CAD $29.83/Hr. - CAD $29.83/Hr.

Summary

Reporting to the Resident Care Manager and receiving work direction from a Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse, the Care Aide/Activity Assistant, Adult Day Program (ADP) works with the interdisciplinary care team within the context of a person and family centred recovery model, to carry out social/leisure activities and established nursing/personal care programs for people living with complex mental health, neurological and neurocognitive disorders. 

 

The Adult Day Program at Youville is a specialized social program for adults living with chronic disease, physical and/or cognitive impairment. The program provide caregivers with daytime respite; we offer flexible hours based on client needs, specialized evidence-based dementia care approaches, and chronic disease management and support. The care team is comprised of interdisciplinary health professionals who are passionate about service quality and enhancing the lives of the clients they support. 

What You Bring

Education
Grade 10 plus graduation from a recognized Resident Care Attendant Program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience, and one year's recent, related experience working with people who live with complex mental health, neurological and neurocognitive disorders (e.g., Parkinson's, Dementia, Brain Injury).

Skills and Abilities
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Ability to deal with others effectively.

Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.

Ability to organize work. Ability to operate related equipment.

 

Successful candidates will be required to successfully complete a Food Safe certification course during their orientation/qualifying period in order to be deemed to have successfully passed their qualifying period.

Your Day-to-Day 

  • Provides and/or assists with personal care and comfort for residents/rehabilitation patients such as bathing, dressing, skin care, mouth care, pericare, and hair care according to the established care plan.
  • Provides a safe and respectful environment for residents/rehabilitation patients by following safety instructions as established on the resident care plan that include activities such as toileting, transferring, bathing, feeding, positioning and ambulating. Assists residents/rehabilitation patients with meals and nourishments, in addition to serving, setting up and collecting meal trays.
  • Carries out individual or group leisure activities such as arts and crafts, woodworking, gardening, sports, games, socio-cultural events and social outings as directed, both inside and outside the building, within approved program, communicating the activity to the people we serve, their families and staff, accompanying the people we serve on outings and appointments, and coordinating the supervision of the people we serve during the activity.
  • Performs delegated nursing procedures on specific direction such as taking weights, administering suppositories and enemas, changing colostomy bags, applying medicated creams and non-sterile dressings, and collecting urine and stool specimens.
  • Functions as a role model for the people we serve to facilitate appropriate social responses. Uses violence prevention techniques and de-escalation strategies to safely respond to people who express themselves aggressively, such as code white, restraint use and seclusion procedures as needed in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards.
  • Performing laundry related duties such as gathering items for washing, loading and unloading and operating washers and dryers, changing bed linen, and folding and putting away items. Assists with packing and unpacking personal belongings and putting away items as required.
  • Establishes a positive and courteous relationship with the people we serve and their families by providing comfort and maintaining/striving to maintain their involvement in decisions that affect them through activities such as providing information, respecting personal choices, and providing opportunities to talk about their concerns.
  • Supports continuity of resident/rehabilitation patient care by reporting related problems to designated nursing staff and by participating in in-services, meetings and unit activities as required.
  • Provides close, constant care or any other level of observation of a person, as determined and assigned by the nursing staff. Alerts the designated nursing staff to any condition changes in a timely way.
