Join Providence Health Care as a Coding Coordinator and lead a team of health science professionals in managing coding and abstracting functions across multiple sites. Education & Experience
• Graduation from an accredited Health Information Management Diploma or Bachelor Program.
• Six (6) years of recent, related experience, including two (2) years’ experience in a management/supervisory position, two (2) years’ experience in International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) coding, and one (1) year experience in data quality assurance management or data reporting analysis, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Current certification with the College of Health Information Management (CHIM) and current active membership with the Canadian Association of Health Information Management (CHIMA).
Skills & Abilities
• Comprehensive knowledge of health information management.
• In-depth knowledge of health information management, ICD-10-CA/CCI, and national/provincial standards.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills in coding, abstracting, data validation, and discharge abstract data.
• Ability to set team goals, provide leadership, and mentor staff in clinical data abstraction and analysis.
• Effective team player with excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
• Experience in drafting policies, managing budgets, and implementing quality improvement programs.
• Proficient in related software (spreadsheet, database, word-processing) and able to operate required equipment.
• Physical ability to perform job duties.
Your Day to Day:
Coordinates coding and abstracting functions at assigned sites, building relationships with departments and clinical programs, and contributing to HIM goals and objectives for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Assists the Regional Manager with HIM Coding team coordination, including budget proposals, resource management, and expenditure monitoring.
Provides operational direction and data quality assurance by establishing site-specific standards, policies, and performance indicators, ensuring compliance with external guidelines (e.g., CIHI, BCMoH).
Manages recruitment, orientation, and training, ensuring the development of staff skills and maintaining staff complement.
Provides expertise and evaluation on CIHI guidelines, coding, data abstraction, and related electronic systems.
Develops and implements quality assurance programs, monitoring work quality and directing data quality review activities.
Manages the Discharge Abstract Database, BC Perinatal Database Registry, and other coding-related databases, addressing system and access issues.
Collaborates with the HIM Coding Leadership team on goal development, HIM projects, and team coordination.
Contributes to the development of patient registration and coding policies in collaboration with the Registration and Records Management team.
Performs coding, abstracting, and data retrieval as a HIM professional, adhering to provincial/organizational standards.
Stays current on HIM developments and recommends improvements to processes and services.
Manages staff schedules, rotations, and payroll, approving leaves and overtime according to policies.
Performs other duties as assigned.
