Your Day to Day
- Leads the development of a long-range research and KT strategy for PHC of nursing and allied health research with a view to stimulating evidenced-based and data-informed practice. Develops PHC’s research agenda and strategic plan and monitors progress against key result indicators.
- Establishes a nursing and allied health research infrastructure for the organization that will ensure leadership and participation in research activities in a manner that is legislatively compliant, ethical, effective, and aligned with the organization’s priorities.
- Collaborates with PHC partners including nursing and allied health leaders, medical leaders and staff clinicians to identify research opportunities that align with PHC’s strategic direction.
- Develops and leads the implementation of new programs and strategic initiatives (such as CREST, and the Professorship in Indigenous Cultural Safety and Nursing). Optimizes existing programs to support nursing and allied health research and KT across PHC. Encourages translational nursing and allied health research and supports professional growth and skill development in nurses and allied health. Facilitates consensus, aligns and integrates research programs and educational initiatives within PHC, with partner universities, and other external partners.
- Develops a knowledge transfer plan for dissemination of research findings to the Executive Director, Quality Practice Environments, leaders in the Professional Practice Office, clinical leaders, employees, and physicians; prepares executive briefings on research conducted by PHC researchers and potential impacts on PHC.
- Reviews literature and monitors evolving trends and practices, identifies opportunities to promote innovation and exploration of new initiatives and technology in research and KT throughout PHC in collaboration with the Executive Director, Quality Practice Environments. Ensures evidence-based approaches to nursing and professional practice issues, resource planning and professional development needs are implemented. Directs the organization on trends/issues impacting programs and/or organizational directions and goals.
- Builds research networks that result in sharing of knowledge, monitoring of trends, identification of opportunities to promote collaborative research and innovation and ensures consistent conduct of quality research throughout PHC.
- Establishes a research agenda for the organization that focuses on incorporating best practices based on evidence into care delivery, fosters development and implementation of initiatives designed to create new knowledge and increase the amount of research conducted in the organization.
- Initiates and manages projects, secures funds (including writing proposals for national and provincial grants to fund projects) and develops business cases. Conducts impact analysis for program/department, contributes to program planning, expansion and implementation as required. Partners with investors for other areas on multi-disciplinary projects.
- In collaboration with the Director(s), Professional Practice Office, provides leadership and expert advice on staffing, skill mix and care delivery approaches through interdisciplinary collaborative practice that promotes patient safety, best practices, improved patient access, and efficient flow of patients across the care continuum. Ensures appropriate communication of changes and updates documentation to keep staff across the organization up to date on changing practices.
- Develops and coordinates professional development opportunities for PHC staff on topics such as publication of project findings, conference presentations, plain language summaries, etc.
- Leads the development of knowledge dissemination activities within PHC, such as annual Interprofessional Research Celebrations and quarterly Practical Knowledge Translation lectures, and the quarterly Reimagining Health Care series.
- Oversees designated staff by providing support, consultation and guidance to staff, establishing clear definitions of responsibility for each employee, reviewing assignments and adjusting work to ensure their work aligns with the goals of the Professional Practice Office. Monitors performance, provides ongoing feedback and completes reviews of staff.
- Develops and manages the associated capital and operating budgets including developing budget forecasts, allocating resources, monitoring expenditures and reporting on variances. Provides financial oversight of all research grants received from external agencies and ensures compliance with funding requirements for grant administration; monitors cost centres for all specific research studies and works with finance to ensure appropriate administrative financial controls are in place to ensure compliance.
- Establishes collaborative research initiatives with other major teaching hospitals and university-based nursing and allied health programs (including BCIT and UBC). Develops and/or contributes to education programs to enhance nursing and allied health capability within PHC.
- Represents PHC Professional Practice Office regionally, provincially, and nationally on broad nursing and allied health practice, education and administration issues. Attends a variety of internal and external meetings as a representative of PHC to provide input and/or receive information and participates in decision-making.
- Liaises with the VP Research & Academic Affairs and President Providence Research to align, promote and coordinate research capacity-building initiatives and programs.
