Reporting to the Professional Practice Leader (PPL) Occupational Therapy, and receiving guidance and support from the Research, Education and Practice Coordinator,

• Supports the interdisciplinary program/team in achieving program and resident goals.
• Provides Occupational Therapy services to designated patients/residents/clients in alignment with PHC's Mission, Vision, Values, and strategic direction.
• Operates within a person and family-centered Recovery model.
• Offers advanced clinical advice for residents with complex mental health illnesses and co-occurring addictions and medical conditions.
• Enables clients to achieve and maintain optimal health outcomes.
• Provides leadership to the interdisciplinary team and participates in developing occupational therapy resources.
• Supervises and directs designated staff, offering functional direction to total care workers.
• Participates in evaluating treatment practices and protocols to promote excellence in occupational therapy.
• Engages as a member of local, provincial, and federal committees, linking hospital programs to external services and resources.
• Advocates for the enhancement of occupational therapy practices within the team.

This position also offers the oppertunity to: 

• Participate in QI projects, Knowledge Translation and other leadership education pathways.
• Receive support from other PHC OTs in the LTC and Mental Health groups, as this role is often addressing both domains at the same time.
• Engage in-depth work with wheelchairs, seating and positioning.

Education

• Baccalaureate degree in Occupational Therapy.
• Up to three (3) years of recent related experience, including one (1) year in the designated program area and two (2) years experience working in a psychiatric setting with individuals who have complex mental health and addictions issues and/or older adults with behavioural and psychological symptoms (BPSD) or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Current full registration as an Occupational Therapist with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (CHCPBC). Eligible for membership with the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists.

• Broad knowledge of the treatment and management of patients/clients with mental health and addictions issues.

• Knowledge of Psychosocial Rehabilitation methodology
• Knowledge of the Mental Health Act as it applies to the rights and obligations of clients and staff.
• Knowledge of community, social and mental health resources
• Basic knowledge of evidence-based clinical practice related to designated program/area.
• Demonstrated ability to deal with and/or guide others in conflict resolution issues.
• Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.

• Competitive salary: $42.56 - $52.95 CAD per hour, depending on experience

Your Day to Day: 

• Develops, plans, and implements advanced occupational therapy assessments and interventions for tertiary mental health clients.
• Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team, patients, and families to create ongoing care plans and discharge plans.
• Acts as a group leader/co-leader for psycho-educational groups addressing clients' recovery needs.
• Provides education and counseling to clients and families on functional and rehabilitation issues across various life domains.
• Offers leadership and clinical guidance to rehabilitation staff, total care workers, and volunteers.
• Contributes to interdisciplinary discussions during team conferences related to client care and discharge planning.
• Participates in quality improvement activities, including the development and evaluation of procedures and clinical guidelines.
• Completes required health record reports and monitors workload statistics.
• Provides clinical supervision and evaluation for students as necessary.
• Maintains current knowledge of Occupational Therapy developments and actively participates in relevant education programs.
