Salary

The salary range for this position is CAD $62.13/Hr. - CAD $68.10/Hr.

Summary

Under the direction of the Supervisor/Clinical Instructor, Perfusion, the Clinical Cardiovascular Perfusionist participates as a member of the open-heart surgical team by selecting, setting up, maintaining and operating extracorporeal circulation equipment during surgery. 

Your duties will include:

  • Monitors patient's circulatory process closely, taking corrective action when needed, and informing surgeon and anesthesiologist.
  • Conducts physiological measurements and monitors responses during surgery.
  • Operates heart-lung machine during surgery and supports other medical specialties by operating mechanical devices to conserve blood and blood products.
  • Operates platelet separator to process autologous blood for topical blood products.
  • Provides extended support for patient's circulation outside of the operating room, including ventricular assist devices, intra-aortic balloon pump, and extracorporeal life support system.

What You Bring

Education/Training:

  • Graduation from a recognized and accredited program in Cardiovascular Perfusion technology, plus one year's recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Eligible for membership with the Canadian Society of Cardiovascular Perfusionists (C.S.C.P.) and/or American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion Certified.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient in dealing with patients/residents, families, staff, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
  • Understanding of various healthcare disciplines and their role in patient/resident care.
  • Ability to extract relevant information to understand patient/resident situations and explore beyond initial concerns.
  • Participation in research activities.
  • Ability to provide supervision and teaching to students.
  • Capability to develop and deliver in-services and presentations.

 Your Day to Day:

  • Selects, assembles, and sets up perfusion equipment for surgeries, post-surgery, and medical emergencies.
  • Sets up auto transfusion system for salvaging and processing patients' blood products during surgeries.
  • Prepares and operates autologous platelet separation system for surgical and non-surgical applications.
  • Operates various perfusion equipment during surgeries and medical procedures.
  • Monitors flows and pressures, interprets blood gas analysis, and adjusts accordingly during surgeries.
  • Monitors physiological responses of patients undergoing extracorporeal circulation or mechanical cardiovascular support.
  • Administers fluids, blood products, drugs, and medical gases under medical staff supervision.
  • Participates in research projects and modifies equipment and procedures as needed.
  • Demonstrates perfusion procedures and equipment operation to medical and nursing staff.
  • Provides training for cardiovascular perfusion students.
