Salary

The salary range for this position is CAD $32.84/Hr. - CAD $41.35/Hr.

Summary

Reporting to the Patient Care Manager or Resident Care Manager and working in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for providing nursing care to an assigned group of patients according to established policies and procedures and the Standards of Practice for the Licensed Practical Nurses of British Columbia. The LPN functions as an independent practitioner, while recognizing situations such as increased patient acuity or care that falls outside the scope of an LPN as appropriate for accessing the RN/RPN for collaborative support and/or clinical intervention. 

 Your duties will include:  

  • Assists patients/residents in meeting physical, social, spiritual, and psychological needs 
  • Consistent with mission, vision, and values of Providence Health Care (PHC) 
  • Implements established protocols 
  • Participates in care planning, assessments, interventions, and evaluations 
  • Documents information and advocates for patients/residents 
  • Attends various meetings including care conferences 
  • Assists with orientation of new staff and students 
  • Responds to and reports incidents following established procedures
  • Performs clerical duties as required 

Mount Saint Joseph Hospital’s (MSJ) is a community-level surgical site with four operating rooms and is home to Providence’s Ophthalmology Program which operates in three procedure rooms. In addition to ophthalmology, surgical services at MSJ include general surgery, dentistry, otolaryngology, plastic surgery and urology.  

What You Bring

Education: 

  • Graduation from a recognized program for Practical Nurses or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. 
  • Graduation from an accredited O.R. Program for Licensed Practical Nurses.
  • Registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing LPN registrant. 
  • Current basic cardiac life support certification. 

 Skills & Abilities:  

  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) procedures appropriate for the area of service. 
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position. 
  • Ability to apply decision making and analytical skills. 
  • Ability to role model conflict resolution strategies. 
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work. 
  • Ability to teach and identify patient/resident learning needs.

Your Day to Day 

  • Provide safe and respectful nursing care, adhering to established policies, individualized care plans, and priorities. 
  • Conduct thorough assessments, monitor signs/symptoms, and communicate with the RN/RPN as needed. 
  • Prepare patients for procedures, transfers, and admissions, coordinating with the interdisciplinary team. 
  • Administer medications per protocol, monitor effects, and maintain communication with the team. 
  • Utilize evidence-based resources to stay updated on nursing practices. 
  • Respond to incidents such as codes, injuries, spills, and alarms, following procedures. 
  • Assist with staff orientation, demonstrating procedures and providing support. 
  • Address patient/resident and family learning needs, provide educational materials, and make referrals. 
  • Attend care planning meetings, provide input, and advocate for patients/residents. 
  • Collaborate with the team to develop and evaluate individualized care plans. 
  • Assist with discharge planning based on patient status and external supports. 
  • Operate and clean equipment, report malfunctions, and handle hazardous materials. 
  • Perform clerical duties such as answering phones, faxing, and maintaining records.
